Objective

The National Do Not Call Registry is run by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Registering a number tells legitimate telemarketers, by law, to stop calling it. 
 

User Context

• I need to register my phone number
   

Procedure

1. Go to www.donotcall.gov and choose Register your phone.
2. Enter the phone number and a valid email address.
3. The FTC sends a confirmation message right after you submit the form. 

   IMPORTANT: You must click the link in that email within 72 hours, or the registration will not take effect.

    
4. Call 1-888-382-1222 (TTY: 1-866-290-4236) from the phone number you want to register and follow the automated prompts.

What Happens Next

• Your number is added to the Registry the next day.
• Telemarketers have up to 31 days to update their calling lists and stop calling you.
• The Registry stops legitimate telemarketers. It does not stop illegal robocalls or scam calls; those operations are already breaking the law and ignoring the Registry. Go to this problem article for troubleshooting.
• Some callers are exempt even after you register, like political campaigns, charities, survey researchers, and companies you have an existing business relationship with.
